By George- The Museums Opened !
Followinga monumental amount of work by Help the Hatters , at last the day arrived when the much vaunted County Museum would be a reality!
Happily the day coincided with the 102nd birthday of County Legend George Haigh, who ...even happier.....was due to open the Museum at 7.15 that day!
Preparations were well advanced and the Museum was looking brilliant ahead of George's arrival. The spanking new signage over the entrance was unveiled and looked a treat( see above)........... and a spot on Hardcastle Road had been reserved for our hero........

And the presentation area was ready for the short opening ceremony.....

Not long after 6 o'clock George arrived.......

....and was soon settling in ...chatting with the locals.......

....sampling his favourite tipple Guinness.....

A chat with County Director Steve Bellis......

and it was time for George to open the Museum.

A word or two from John Fitzpatrick....

...was followed by a neat response from George , and …

By George ! by Man in a Hat.

As you all know, every year on 29th June we meet up in the Florist Pub on Shaw Heath, in order to celebrate George Haigh’s birthday, and to chew the County cud.
Well, this year is no different, and we will gather on Thursday from 4.30pm
This year, we’re absolutely bloomin’ delighted to advise that the great man himself, yes, George Haigh, will be joining us between 5pm & 6pm.
Just in case there are any unenlightened readers out there, George is the oldest surviving former County player, and this year, will be celebrating his 102nd birthday!

In fact, we think George is the oldest surviving professional footballer in the world! Can you prove otherwise?
This is the occasion on which we indulge in drinking Purple Velvet (port & Guinness), which according to George, was the drink of choice for the County players of the thirties - before the game!
So why not drop in and give George your regards. You can even ask him about Purple Velvet if you don’t believe us.
Now, George is too old for b…

It is some years since I first made contact with Help the Hatters.
The group was well into its wholesale reconstruction of County's training facility at Manor Farm. ....truly and astonishingly turning a farm into a training facility really.
It was inspiring stuff to see supporters weighing in with jobs they would likely run a country mile away from doing on the home front.

Skilled craftsmen donated skills willingly and for free, and those with little in the way of skills to offer did what they could.

Help the Hatters knew long before Tesco that `every little helps!'
Fitzy eyed me up warily before assigning me to mowing the grass- thus limiting any potential hazards.

In truthmy contributions over the coming weeks/months were minimal, but it was instructional to see the most excellent training facility emerge eventually where once stood a dilapidated farm house !
Little has changed over the years......the faces maybe to some degree , but the driving ethic remains intact...`Doers not…
