Taking a look at County v North Ferriby United

WELCOME TO FA TROPHY HOLDERS

County host the winners of last season's FA Trophy final on Tuesday night with the visit of the Villagers form North Ferriby. We have only hosted the current holders of the senior non-league trophy once previously. That came in October 2011 when the now defunct Darlington side came to EP and claimed a 4-3 victory. Back with Tuesday's visitors and we are looking to end theory 100% record at Edgeley Park.

PAST MEETINGS

The first by North Ferriby came soon after Barrow had knocked us out of the FA Trophy on our own patch in November 2013. A Matthew Wilson double wrapped up the points with County's only reply coming from Jevons later on. Last season they repeated the damage, and it was Wilson again who got the only goal on the opening day of the season. Links to All Things Stockport County's reports on both matches can be found below.

CURRENT FORM

The Villagers have had a full set of results so far this season, They began with the narrowest of defeats at Tamworth but responded well to score four goals without reply last Tuesday, That win was all the more impressive coming as it did against one of the pre-season favourites Chorley. The timing of the goals will give County a warning about relaxing late on - with Curtis Bateson completing his hat-trick with goals on 82 and 84, still leaving time for Tom Denton to add the fourth.

Hat-trick man-Curtis Bateson.
On Saturday they ended Solihull Moors 100% record for the season. It could have been even better as they lead through Denton;s first half goal until injury time when substitute Armson gave the Moors a point. They lie 8th in the table at present.

CURRENT CONNECTIONS

Neither today's squads include players who played competitively for the opposition in the past, although Ryan Kendall did have a trial at County in 2010.

THE North Ferriby SQUAD

The good news as far s County fans are concerned is that Matthew Wilson is no longer with North Ferriby, but we are likely to face him in October as he is now with Gainsborough. On the eve of Saturday's game they added to their squad by bringing in full back Sam Topliss, who was with them on loan from Hull City last season, but is now a permanent member of the Villagers squad. Amongst the handful of other additions from last season are Nathan Hotte (Bradford PA) and Ash Palmer (Buxton). The full set of players, only four of which are yet to make the team sheet, are:

PAST CONNECTIONS

No point trying to come up with a team of connections for this game. There are only two men I can trace who have played for both clubs. Keeper Ian Ironside, whose son currently plays in National League North for Alfreton Town, joined the Villagers after failing to make it at Barnsley. He later entered League football with Scarborough and went on to a decent League career, which included 18 months at County from September '93. He made his debut as a substitute at AFC Bournemouth, replacing Neil Edwards in a 1-1 draw, and becoming County's first goalkeeper substitute in a senior competitive game. Ian went on to play 21 games before returning to Scarborough.

The other player is Hull born midfielder Mick Mathews. He spent the 1985-86 season at North Ferriby before returning to League football with Halifax Town. A £36,000 move from Scarborough to County followed a few years later and Mick played 41 games, scoring 4 goals, before returning to the Yorkshire coastal club for £15,000 just 10 months later.

A LOOK AT NATIONAL LEAGUE NORTH

Three games in and three wins ,that fledgling table looks very nice with County and Nuneaton Town unable to be split at present. Obviously that could change on Tuesday, and for Nuneaton their next challenge is a trip to Lowestoft . Looking at our nearest geographical neighbours it's Stalybridge Celtic who lead the way, lying in 10th place. This is thanks to an unbeaten week at home (drew then won) after dropping all three points in the opening game. Curzon Ashton lie joint 16th with 3 points but they had a bad day on Saturday. The first half at Boston saw them concede two penalties, with Curzon players sent off in both incidents. This after they had a great start with a goal after 93 seconds. Meanwhile FCUM are still looking for their first win of the season, but they got a point on Saturday with Ashworth levelling against Tamworth. That game saw 3,580 attending, a new highest in the league so far this season . The Moston side lie 20th on goal difference, ahead of Telford and the surprise early strugglers Chorley. The teams within a win of the Hatters are included in the table below:

1 COUNTY 3 1 0 0 2 1 2 0 0 3 1 3 9
2 Nuneaton T 3 2 0 0 2 0 1 0 0 3 2 3 9

4 Tamworth 3 1 0 0 1 0 1 1 0 3 2 2 7

6 Harrogate T 3 2 0 0 5 2 0 0 1 0 1 2 6

Ashley Sammons of Corby tops the goal scorers list with 5, ahead of Dayle Southwell of Boston, who is now on 4 thanks to those penalties against Curzon Ashton. One other player Elliott Durrell (Tamworth) has scored in all three of his clubs games to date.

Another former County man joined a National League North club during the week. Making his debut in goals for Alfreton Town in their 1-1 draw with Brackley was Matt Duke. Matt was a very popular keeper during his brief loan spell from Hull in August 2005. He played 3 games, with Country drawing the first two and winning the last. I suspect he will get a great reception if in the Alfreton side on 10 September, his first playing return to EP.

IN RESERVE

Those of you who want consecutive nights of County action should head back to Edgeley Park on Wednesday night. The reserves play their second game of the season when neighbours Hyde United visit. Other matches this week are on Wednesday: Witton Albion v FCUM, and Friday: New Mills v Curzon Ashton, RIASA South v Stalybridge Celtic.
