Weekend Review 11 October

VANARAMA CONFERENCE NORTH

On FA Cup weekend the biggest surprises - excluding Boston's result - came in 2 of the 3 Conference North games that took place with two of the teams in the play-off positions losing. County's Tuesday night conquerors Oxford City were well beaten at home by Solihull Moors. The Moors scored four times in 60 minutes through Darren Byfield (15 & 59), Omar Bogle (34) and Ryan Beswick (56). The home side managed a late consolation through Marlon Jackson (82) but they stay four points ahead of County having played two games more.

Fourth placed Barrow played one of their games in hand but managed to lose out to Bradford Park Avenue. The Horsfall Road side took a first half lead through Danny Frost (37). A penalty after 50 minutes gave Barrow the chance to draw level but it was Richard Marshall (84) who claimed the winning goal for Bradford.

The final Conference North game had a more predictable result as Hyde lost 4-1 at Hednesford Town. The Ewen Fields side have now conceded 31 goals in the league the latest batch coming through Chris Westwood (55) and a Danny Glover that-trick (4, 29 & 68), the last being a penalty. Hyde also claimed a penalty in the closing stages, Connor Hughes (90) converting.

CONFERENCE NORTH FA CUP UPDATE

In the FA Cup League leaders AFC Fylde joined County in the last qualifying round thanks to a 1-0 win over Buxton. North Ferriby United also won through at home, with a 2-1 victory over Grantham Town thanks to a late goal from Nathan Jarman.

The `all Conference North' games saw Tamworth continue their cup run by beating Lowestoft Town 1-0. Whilst Leamington and Worcester City will need to replay after a 1-1 draw. Danny Newton leveled the scores after the home, side had gone in 1-0 down at half time following a shot that deflected of a defender.

Two other Conference North sides require replays. Firstly Colwyn Bay must make the short trip to Warrington Town on Tuesday after the Cheshire side came back in the 5th minute of injury time to draw 1-1. Gloucester City's match finished with the same score in their case at Staines Town.

The other sides who won their games did so fairly comfortably. Halesowen Town proved no problem for Guiseley. Three goals saw the 5th placed side through. Chorley proved far too strong for their hosts Bamber Bridge in front of an impressive 2,214 crowd - the turnstile were closed 20 minutes before the kick-off. Hyde's conquerors in the previous round Marine, found Gainsborough Trinity a much tougher proposition. The Lincolnshire team recorded a comfortable 4-0 win although three of the goals came in the last 20 minutes.

The two Conference North sides to suffer defeats were Boston United, who lost to two second half goals at Evo-Stik Division 1 South side Leek Town, and Brackley Town beaten by the same score at the hands of Conference South St Albans City.
