Oxford City Preview

County travel to Marston near Oxford on Saturday or Little Spain as it might well be called, given the number of Spanish players Oxford City have brought in during this season.

OPPOSITION FORM

Our opponents recent form is comparable to County's apart from an FA Cup defeat to lower level opposition. However they do seem to exhibit sharp changes in fortune not least with the 8-1 home defeat followed by the 7-2 away victory in four days at the start of September. Their last five results were:

Date Opponent Result
13 Sep H v Gainsborough Trinity Won 2-0
15 Sep A v Bradford Park Avenue Won 5-0
20 Sep A v Guiseley Lost 0-4
27 Sep A v Shortwood United (FAC 2Q) Lost 1-2
4 Oct A v Colwyn Bay Won 5-3

This line-up included 4 of the 5 Spanish player who have turned out for City this season. The Spanish influence is primarily a result of the club employing Enrique Guillen as Head Coach. Ever since he became involved with the first team in January Guillen has recommended Spanish players to boost the City squad.

Enrique Guillen.

The last line of defence in the cup tie and in Wales has been Bermudan international Freddie Hall. Hall got his chance after first choice Mark Scott suffered an injury. The Bermudan joined City on non contract terms from Conference Premier side Chester where he played 8 games this season. Although he has been with several clubs in English football this will be the first time County have come up against the keeper who is described as very vocal and a good organiser.

City have scored plenty of goals this season - only League leaders AFC Fylde have scored more - mind you they have also conceded a fair few with only teams in the bottom 4 shipping more.

Adi Yussuf.
Top scorer is Adi Yussuf with 8, whilst Rodrigues and Winters have 4 each. Of the three men only Winters has scored against County previously - getting the first of Oxford's four goals in the corresponding game last season.

THE COUNTY SIDE

Just when it looked the injury problems were clearing up we witnessed two defenders having to be substituted in Saturday's game. Normally during an unbeaten run such as County have built you would expect there to be no changes to the side but with a part time squad on a long away trip there may even be work commitments affecting who can travel. It may also be that for an away game a more defensive midfield could be needed - which might mean Tunji Moses slotting into the side now he has recovered from injury.

PREVIOUS MATCHES

Our previous visit to Oxford City was one that everyone involved with County wanted to forget very quickly. Not only were the team well beaten, a player was sent off, and two visiting fans invaded the pitch leading to an FA warning. The only good part of the game came in the first two minutes - when Stonehouse put through his own goal. From a County perspective it was all down hill after that.

MATCH PROSPECTS

This game is the first of two for Oxford City this week - so with County in FA Cup action on Saturday a defeat in what is probably our fist promotion six-pointer sincing losing League status could leave us well adrift of the home side. With both sides scoring goals with ease recently it's probably down to the defences as to who will come out on top. If County are able to keep their defence together for the full game Alan Lord will be expecting to take something from Oxford this time around and erase some of those bad memories.
