Ilkeston FA Cup preview

With the unbeaten run over, County get the tricky task of facing lower league opposition in the FA Cup on Saturday. Opponents Ilkeston have only existed for three years as a senior club. They were formed after Ilkeston Town were liquidated in the courts in September 2009. The man who had just helped set up Town's scholarship scheme decided to launch a bid to get control of the assets. This took a while and by the time he had the full structure he wanted in place it was too late to apply for a place in the Pyramid so they ran just a Youth team for the 2010-11 season. An assessment by the FA saw them placed in Division 1 South of the Northern Premier League for their first session season. Promotion was gained at the first attempt and they are now established one tier below County.

OPPOSITION FORM

Our opponents recent form is comparable to County's apart from an FA Cup defeat to lower level opposition. However they do seem to exhibit sharp changes in fortune not least with the 8-1 home defeat followed by the 7-2 away victory in four days at the start of September. Their last five results were:

First choice keeper is 20 year old Jordan Smith. He is on a season's loan from parent club Nottingham Forest and like most of the Ilkeston side will be facing County for the first time.

Jordan Smith.

Rob Duffy is top scorer with 10 goals. He has come up against County in the past - making a substitute appearance for Rushden & Diamonds during our Football league games and suffering a 0-2 defeat as part of the Grimsby team that visited in September 2011. Kane Richards will also need watching as he has nine goals to his tally this season.

The Ilkeston team has a similar look to it as County's. It's mainly based on younger players that have either come through the Youth system or been brought ion on their release by more senior clubs. They are backed up by a handful of more senior men, although none of these could be described as veterans.

Joe Maguire.

Ilkeston's FA Cup run began a month ago with a 2-1 win at Matlock Town, Richards and Duffy getting the goals. They then beat Conference North rival's Solihull 1-0 thanks to Joe Maguire's goal.

THE COUNTY SIDE

There is unlikely to be any major changes to County's line-up as Alan Lord will see the match as part for the build up to the trip to Leamington next weekend. Hopefully he will have a full side to pick from if Scott Duxbury has recovered from last weekend's injury.

PREVIOUS MATCHES

We've not met Ilkeston at first team level so far, however at the end of August 2012 the development squads of today's two opposing sides met in a friendly in Derbyshire. Very little information is available about the game other than County won 5-3 with Alex Meaney scoring a hat-trick.

MATCH PROSPECTS

Let's be honest everyone connected with County expects a win from this game. It won't be simple, we know that from last season's close-run affair with Brighouse when County could well have been well behind before managing to score the only goal through Kyle Jacobs (63 minutes). Hopefully this time we will get that early goal to relax everyone. If the game does end up being drawn Ilkeston's web site reports, the replay will be at the New Manor Ground on Monday evening.

OTHER MATCHES

The other Vanarama Conference North sides involved in the FA Cup on Saturday include AFC Fylde. They host Martin McIntosh's Buxton side. If either Fylde or the Hatters win the next home league game at Edgeley Park will be postponed for the final qualifying round.

North Ferriby U v Grantham T, Tamworth v Lowestoft T, Leamington v Worcester C, Guiseley v Halesowen T, AFC Fylde v Buxton, Colwyn Bay v Warrington T, Leek T v Boston U, Bamber Bridge v Chorley, Gainsborough Trin v Marine, Staines T v Gloucester C, St Albans C v Brackley T.

In addition there are three matches in the Vanarama Conference North, two of which could see teams above County pull further ahead.

CHORLEY GAME OFF?

Thought I would add a quick warning that although the fixture at Chorley is still showing up on County's fixture list for 11 November - the Chorley website has it shown as on a date to be arranged. Chorley are shown as being away to Barrow in a Lancashire Cup tie that night. Might be worth making some extra checks before planning your journey next month.
